A Picture Is Worth a Thousand Downloads

Think most musicians make lots of money? Think again.

This graphic chart posted at InformationIsBeautiful.net does a terrific job at giving a visual illustration of how much artists really earn through online sales of albums, song downloads, and streaming audio.

Make a Record with Over the Rhine

Any Over the Rhine fans out there? (That’s me waving my arms wildly.) A new album is on the way, and you can become involved with its release.

In another of his typically long-form letters, co-founder/pianist Linford Detweiler explains that he and his wife, lead vocalist Karin Bergquist are looking for financial support to record their new album. It’s not that Over the Rhine is in desperate need—“Send money or we’ll have to quit!”—but rather that they’re the latest in a new trend. Having left their record label a couple years ago to become independent, they now need fans to help with the upfront recording costs normally handled by a record label.

The Arrows from South Africa

I’m always looking for a new artist with a fresh sound, especially one that could spark the Christian music scene. A friend of mine (thanks Ed!) just turned me on to a group called The Arrows, hailing from South Africa. Never heard of them? No worries, neither had I until the other day . That’s because they’re only starting to make some waves on the indie circuit here in America. I could make comparisons to Feist, Ingrid Michaelson, and other quirky indie stalwarts with jazzy undertones, but frankly I think this is so much better. Maybe you’d best just hear them for yourselves in this fan-made YouTube video for their 6-minute song, “In the Words of Satan”—clever stuff, reminiscent of C.S. Lewis’s Screwtape Letters. (And yes, the duo has other faith-inspired songs—look for a review soon.) Video after the jump.

Delirious - One Last Hurrah

As many of you already know, Delirious has decided to retire from music making (for a while, anyway). Last month they released History Makers, a new greatest hits compilation (which I’ll review in the near future), but that’s not quite the last from the pioneering worship band.

Who’s the Biggest of Them All?

A friend and I have been debating for the last few months over which band/artist is currently the biggest (i.e. most popular) to come out of the Christian music market. He fervently declared it was Skillet, whose Awake album debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Albums chart this past August. That’s certainly the highest position to date for a Christian artist, but as I pointed out to my friend, it means nothing—it could have been a slow week for new releases. Still, the album has already sold in excess of 200,000 copies in 3 months time.

I countered that Switchfoot, Flyleaf, Relient K, or even Steven Curtis Chapman might potentially sell better, thus demonstrating they were more popular. Not so. Whereas Skillet sold 67,000 copies of Awake in its first week, Flyleaf debuted at No. 8 and sold 56,000 copies of Memento Mori, and Switchfoot debuted at No. 13 with 39,000 copies of Hello Hurricane. Neither Relient K nor Steven Curtis Chapman cracked the Top 20.

Paul Speaks on Paul

A rather cool interview with Paul Baloche, recently shown on CBN. I like his observation that the Apostle Paul is like us in that he only knew the risen Jesus. And that his new album is more focused on New Testament scripture. My review will post in the weeks ahead.
